- first (2, 1) pair was known to Pythagoras in ~500 B.C
- first (3, 1) pair was discovered by Poulet in 1941
- first (4, 1) pair was discovered by Lee in 1966
- first (5, 1) pair was discovered by Te Riele in 1982
- first (6, 1) pair was discovered by Pedersen in 1997
- first (7, 1) pair was discovered by Garcia in 2001
Each step is exponentially harder to take, so it took another 15 years to find the first (8, 1) amicable pair.
