1) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU Utilization (Message 1094)

That wasn't the question. Please read the question.

The conversation was about maximizing utilization, and one way to do that is by running more WUs and reducing kernel size. Your question wasn't very clear. Given the context and direction of the conversation would would assume the anonymous "it" would refer to kernel size and not utilization. My apologies.

A good start to reducing utilization would simply be to run fewer WUs at a reduced kernel size. It's up to you do decide how low is acceptable.

What should we reduce it to?

You can reduce kernel size in your project preferences: https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/prefs.php?subset=project

It's because Boinc is written as a 32bit program and that's the limit it can show, it USES all of the memory until some Project comes up with a greater than 4gb workunit itself, which SO FAR none have done yet. A 64bit version has been discussed but I don't know how far along it is.

Is that really the case? BOINC has been offering 64bit versions for years although a 32bit download is still available. Additionally many projects offer 32bit and 64bit applications although Amicable Numbers only offers 64bit applications. You can peruse the download offerings and see both x86 and x86_64 offerings: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php OR https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/

Thank you for sharing this. I am running 2 tasks on my (aging!) 7970 as GPU utilization had dropped to ~93%.

Matt I had a look at your tasks. In terms of run-time am I correct in saying that you are returning 2 results roughly every 45 minutes on your 7970?

That is correct. GPU is a 7970 @ 985Mhz/1425mhz

I run 3x Numberfields@home tasks and the other core feeds 2x amicable numbers tasks on the 7970 and 1x Primegrid PPS Sieve task on a GTX 1060 3gb.
Utilization is ~90% on a 2500k

Is it really necessary to assign a full CPU core to each task even with the decrease in usage more tasks entail?

It likely depends on the GPU/CPU, but for my AMD 7970/i5-2500k I reserve only 0.5 CPU for each task.

Ok, so how do I avoid OpenCL so I am not wasting my computer time and electricity for less work?

OpenCL tasks on this project are for GPUs. Your system (https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/results.php?hostid=36634) is only utilizing the CPU on this project, so no changes are needed.

For me tasks the are averaging at least twice as long as before with no increase in credit. I like collecting those useless credits so I'll be moving most of my boxes elsewhere...good luck

I'll try to remember to wave when, sometime next year, I pass you in project credits!
For science!

My 7970 was running kernel 21 and outputting results in 1500-2500 seconds for most of September. Recently the WUs have been taking 2700-4000 seconds with some requiring 5000+. I've experimented with kernel 22, but the results seem similar.

Have there been any changes to the WUs or is the issue my drivers, settings, etc?

Thank you, Sergei.

I have updated the config for my AMD 7970 to run 2 WUs concurrently.
