1) Message boards : Number crunching : FYI. Some credits didn't post correctly to the consolidators (Message 2045)

Post:
BOINCstats updates periodically, not continuously. So, the amount of credit reported on BOINCstats will typically be less than the amount of credit reported by the projects. At this moment, BOINCstats reports that you have earned 344,475,796 credits and Amicable reports that you have earned 345,173,087. The difference (~700,000) is approximately 7% of your Amicable RAC. That 7% difference is the same for my account. So, it does not appear that your credits are being unreported by BOINCstats - there is simply a lag between Amicable and BOINCstats.

Ok, thanks for the response. Hoping for Apple Silicon support at some point in the future, cause the new M4 Macs are selling like crazy right now, with many people finally ditching Windows...

And the new M4 Ultra Mac Studio, and maybe even an M4 Extreme Mac Pro, are coming this year, with the Ultra, or both new chips, having much better scaling than the M2 Ultra, meaning a lot of extra compute power, along with the new Nvidia 50-series GPU's, so having Apple SIlicon support ready for the M4 Ultra would be so amazing :)

The M4 Ultra Mac Studio will support the NVIDIA 50-series GPUs?!?!?!? Can you please post a link to that report? TIA.

4) Message boards : Number crunching : How many days does the interval "average" account for in "Recent average credit"? (Message 1996)

Mine seems to have stabilized within one week. It's at 50 rank currently, yesterday it was at 51, fist two days were massive and but it seems like it's holding now.

Your computer is continuing to climb the ranks. It is now just outside of the top 20. Rank is an interesting statistic to follow, but it is dependent on how others' computers are doing.

I don't know whether this computer is crunching other GPU projects. However, based on 20 recent Amicable task results, this machine has a maximum theoretical RAC of ~6 million Amicable credits/day. That's quite the cruncher.

I was curious as well. This doesn't directly answer your question but it does describe part of the functionality. Quote below is from:

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/boinc_papers/credit/text.php

In BOINC, recent average credit (RAC) is computed as an exponentially weighted average with a half-life of one week. In other words, if an entity is not granted any credit for one week, its RAC will decline by 50%

Hi Keith:

It typically takes ~3 weeks for my RAC to reach a steady state. Unfortunately, because of hardware instability, network outages, and power outages, I typically do not experience a 3-week stretch of steady-state crunching. So, practically speaking, my RAC rarely reaches a steady state. For example, my RAC is currently experiencing an upward trend following network and power outages during the recent holiday season.

BOINC manager for MacOS provides a graphical representation of each project's RAC (on that particular machine and for the user) for the past 30 days.

Best wishes,

Dave

Thank you, that answers my question.

I was just checking your profile and based on your half as much credits as my total, it seems your hardware found 2 amicable pairs, whereas the number of total credits being double that my hardware crunched though managed to find none as of the time of this post. How odd.

Hi Steven:

I know this doesn't answer your question, but it might interest you that the rate of Amicable pair discovery has diminished significantly over time. For example, grcpool.com-3 has total credit of approximately 11 billion and has discovered ~487,000 Amicable pairs. I have total credit of almost 10 billion, but have discovered only ~36,000 Amicable pairs. I started Amicable crunching in late 2022, but grcpool.com-3 has been crunching since mid-2017.

Thanks, Farscape. I have been crunching on behalf of Amicable for only ~25 months, but I have been crunching BOINC projects for more than 19 years. My BOINC journey has been blessed by an extremely indulgent spouse. Nonetheless, I plan to start cutting back on my crunching later this year - I have one more milestone that I want to reach.

The task that Sergei references was completed by my computer <https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/show_host_detail.php?hostid=214000>. This is an 2018 i5 MacMini connected via Thunderbolt 2 to three eGPUs, each housing an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT.

The following GPUs running under MacOS have recently completed Amicable tasks: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, AMD Radeon RX 6600, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M, AMD Radeon RX 580, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780.

I have been having trouble with a 2008 MacPro 3,1 with two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti GPUs. However, I don't think the problem is with Amicable. I think that computer is reaching the end of its life.

I am very thankful that Amicable continues to support intel Macs with AMD GPUs. Not many BOINC projects do so.

Thanks for the explanation. Glad to hear it is not a problem with my machines.

My RAC has more than doubled in the last 7 days. It certainly appears that recent WUs are being crunched more quickly than the WUs I was crunching last week. I am going to look at my recent results to see if I am on track to hit my all-time high in Amicable throughput, which I achieved between January 26 and February 2.

Just want to add my $0.02 on this topic. Over the past few days, five of my twelve crunchers were auto banned as a result of too many invalid results (4 out of 200-800 tasks). I emailed Sergei and explained that it appeared to be a more or less anomalous situation that was not due to overclocking or some other change in my configuration. Sergei graciously accepted my explanation and removed the ban within a few hours of my request. So, I am not going to complain about the auto-ban process, because Sergei is willing to accept reasonable explanations and un-ban a host in a timely manner.

I don't have the time to pay much attention to BOINC on my machines, as they are workstations for me and my graduate students. Thus, I value plug-and-play distributive computing solutions for my machines. With the demise of SETI and Collatz, Amicable Numbers and Rosetta continue to provide that to me and I am delighted to contribute my GPU and CPU cycles to these projects.

War Eagle!

Hi Tim:

I agree - my AMD GPUs generated a 20-25% higher RAC at Einstein @ Home than here at Amicable Numbers. However, in the third quarter of 2023, Einstein ceased supplying data for one of their apps and the only alternative app for AMD GPUs on Macs wouldn't run reliably. That's when I committed 100% of my GPUs and their effort to Amicable.

Good luck with your crunching.

Dave

Hi Tiger-Dave - thanks for the reply.

I guess that I almost expected this information!

We date, the only project that I have used where AMD kicked booty on the nVidia cards was on Milkyway GPU work. Since then, Einstein is producing better numbers than here at Amicable - just not as good as the nVidia cards...

Thanks once again for it response!

Hi Farscape:

Based on what other AMD 7900 XTX crunchers are achieving, I think you are getting the expected throughput:
https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/gpu_list.php

The average throughput of this GPU is 248.3 seconds/task. This translates into ~2.4 M credits/day.

AMD GPUs don't appear to perform as well as NVIDIA GPUs at Amicable Numbers. My 6800 XTs are averaging approximately 1.1 M credits/day and my 5700 XTs are averaging approximately 600 K credits/day.

Happy Crunching!

Tigers_Dave

I just restarted crunching Amicable Numbers and have been reading some of the message postings.
I have 2 EVGA 3090ti's / 2 EVGA 3090's and 1 AMD 7900 XTX.

The AMD card produces (2.7M/day) 95% usage a 1/3 of what the EVGA 3090's produce (5.5-6.0M/day) 85-90% usage on average.

To be clear - what suggestions do you have that might get the AMD card into the same range of output?

Hi Adi Putra Jaya:

Amicable GPU tasks require 8 GB of system memory. If your machine doesn't have enough RAM, Amicable GPU tasks will use virtual memory/swap files to make up the shortfall. However, it appears that your VM/Swapfile allocation is insufficient to accommodate Amicable GPU tasks.

Regards,

David

One more thing, johndad5 - Amicable GPU tasks require 8 GB of system RAM. You can see a discussion of this issue here: https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/forum_thread.php?id=79&postid=1322#1322. You might spend some time browsing the thread that encompasses this post, as it discusses the potential shortcomings of using a pagefile to overcome this limitation.

Hi johndad5:

Happy to try to help you. Are you sure Amicable is having trouble with your laptop (that has the RTX 4060)? I don't see any recent tasks for that computer (ID 212551). OTOH, Amicable running on your core i7/GTX 1660Ti computer (ID 211049) has reported some recent errors.

I know next to nothing about Windows, so I have copied the entire error message from one of your recent problematic tasks to this message (below). One thing common to all of your problematic tasks is that the working set size is greater than the client RAM limit (4843.71 MB). Are BOINC and/or Amicable getting enough memory? I noticed that the peak working set size for the task that this computer recently completed (68978624) was only 2828.43 MB.

<core_client_version>7.16.11</core_client_version>
