6) Message boards : Bug tracker : Strange validation status of a task (Message 1744)
Posted 17 Dec 2023 by Profile Laurent Lyaudet
Post:
Hello,
The following workunit was listed as waiting for validation :
https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/workunit.php?wuid=30310355
in my list for computer 201681 since the 11th or the 12th of december.
But now it is validated by someone else.
And my computer task has status "Délai expiré - aucune réponse" (Delay expirated - no answer).
I don't know what was wrong but I already had a task where the validation was stuck and I informed you of it.
For this previous task, you succeed to unlock its validation.
I don't know what can be done afterwards for the task of the 11th of december.
It does not matter much, but maybe you will find a way to correct the bug, nevertheless.
Best regards,

7) Message boards : Bug tracker : Website upgrade and missing translations (Message 1715)
Posted 4 Aug 2023 by Profile Laurent Lyaudet
Post:
Hello,
Is there any website upgrade in preparation ?
I noticed that some strings in prefs are not translated or outdated.
For example, in my settings :
https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/prefs.php?subset=global
"Switch between tasks every"
is untranslated.
But it is translated here:
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/blob/aef1b9fbd97fb4d5b1d01ecee58cd6a57a3c454c/html/languages/translations/fr.po#L1385

In my settings specifics to Amicable numbers:
https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/prefs.php?subset=project
"Use AMD/ATI GPU"
is untranslated and outdated.
It seems it was replaced with "Use AMD GPU"
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/blob/aef1b9fbd97fb4d5b1d01ecee58cd6a57a3c454c/html/inc/prefs_project.inc#L81

There are also truly specifics strings like:
"Should Amicable Numbers show amicable pairs discovered by you?"
"Max # jobs"
"Max # CPUs"
"You need to select at least 2 CPUs to get CPU tasks" typo "You need to select at least 2 CPUs to get CPU tasks."
"Kernel size for AMD/ATI GPUs"
"Kernel size for NVIDIA GPUs"
These 6 strings can not be found in the GitHub repo.
But I can find a way to translate them nevertheless and propose it to BOINC maintainers :)

Moreover, I don't know if it would be sufficient but
"Use Intel GPU"
exists on GitHub.
So maybe an upgrade of the website would enable people who check this checkbox to compute amicable pairs with Intel GPU ?
(I have no idea if the necessary executable for that exists.)

Thanks, best regards,
Laurent Lyaudet

Can you do something about it, please ?

11) Message boards : Bug tracker : Really slow WU 16 hours instead of 1 to 2 hours (Message 1704)
Posted 29 Jul 2023 by Profile Laurent Lyaudet
Post:
Hello,
I had again a really slow WU but on GPU this time (opencl_nvidia).
This is my record so far.
https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/workunit.php?wuid=27620016
/from 2^2*5*11*67*367*1237 /to 2^2*5*11*67*367*1303*21851 /task_size 30201578225
Total time : 18,423.51
CPU time : 350.37
Usually on my laptop a GPU task takes 10 to 15 minutes at most 30 minutes.
But this one took 5 hours 7 minutes and 3 seconds.
That's 10 times slower than a rare slow task on GPU and 30 times slower than a somewhat common fast task.
If something could be done to make this task faster, it would be great :)

Laurent Lyaudet

Hello,
I just opened an issue on GitHub BOINC repository but it was not the right place:
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/5297
In BOINC Manager, there is a button bottom left:
"Pages web du projet"
If I click on it, I have:
- "Home page" -> It should be translated to "Page d'accueil".
- "Forums"
- "Votre compte"
- "Your tasks" -> It should be translated to "Vos tâches".
- "Votre équipe"
Can you add the two missing translations, please?

Thanks, best regards,

Hello,
My last WU was terribly slow :
https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/workunit.php?wuid=27300137
Both elapsed time and remaining estimated time were increasing.
The completion percent increased very slowly.
I was at 25,948 % for a few minutes,
with elapsed 4:17:10 and remaining 12:14:10 approximately.
It is an mt task :
https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/result.php?resultid=62973424
opencl_nvidia tasks in parallel work fine.
It seems to be the same bug than previously:
amicable_checkpoint file was corrupt with content:
0 0#
I cleaned amicable_checkpoint and other files.
And restarted it.
But after one hour is was still at less than 3,5 % with completion estimated in 6 days.
I stopped my computer, and restarted later and completion was back at less than 0,5 % !
I don't know what is wrong with this WU,
but clearly it could not be computed on my laptop for an unknown reason.
I had to abort it and switch to another.
Someone else had error on it also : https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/result.php?resultid=62967700
It may be useful to have a look at it in detail.

I'll know it if it happens again.
My laptop switched to another task after ending that one with error.
Just a reference for myself:
amicable_checkpoint file is found in two directories:
/var/lib/boinc/slots/0/
/var/lib/boinc/slots/1/

Hello :)
Thanks for your answer.
Maybe it was not an infinite loop but I did get an error as is logged in the task:

The error stopped the calculus 20 minutes ago after 4 heures 13 min 23 sec of computing.
I hope you will be able to tell if it is an error due to my laptop or if the code has a bug or a random error.

Hello,

Usually the open_mt tasks take between 1 hour 30 and 2 hours on my laptop.
But today, I had one that was stuck at 99,921 % for 3 hours.
I stopped boinc and restarted it, after a few seconds completion percent was down to 74 %.
I waited another hour and after 4 hours in total the task was stuck again at 99,921 %.
So I suspect there may be an infinite loop.
Here is the WU : https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/workunit.php?wuid=27069146
Here is the task : https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/result.php?resultid=62461556
Here is the PC : https://sech.me/boinc/Amicable/show_host_detail.php?hostid=201681
I can help reproduce it tomorrow in the end of afternoon.
Nothing fancy with my laptop, no overclocking, I'm using latest Ubuntu 23.04.
I hope we can find the bug soon and correct it :)

Best regards,
Laurent Lyaudet

Hello,

SPOILER FOR EVERYONE : try by yourself with the hints above first :)
I did the following :

The doc for the missing script is here :
https://developers.google.com/recaptcha/docs/display?hl=fr

You need to use the dev tools of your webbrowser and execute this JS :
let scriptElement = document.createElement("script");
scriptElement.setAttribute("src", "https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api.js");
document.body.appendChild(scriptElement);

It will append the missing script tag and load the JS from Google Recaptcha.
Everything afterward worked for me.
> "I can get it to show up and everything by using another projects script for it and injecting it. But it won't verify so I am doing something wrong."
If you told the truth, I don't see what my solution will bring above what you tried.
Let us know if it worked for you.

Hello,

I was wondering how much it would cost to reproduce all this search.
I mean let's say that amicable numbers up to 2^64 costed 4 hexaflops to find (I have no idea of the true order of magnitude.)
Would it be possible given the list of these amicable pairs to verify they are indeed amicable pairs (easy) and no other exist in this range (hard ?) with say 2 teraflops instead ?
If not, would there be some auxiliary results that could be saved on top of amicable pairs that would permit to verify everything with far less cost ?
It would be great to shift from "Trust the server, the calculus was done rigorously" to "Look if you have one month worth of calculus, you can check what took years you achieve" :)

Thanks, best regards,
Laurent Lyaudet

Hint : search Google Recaptcha and JS dynamic loading.
The webpage is missing the script tag to load Google recaptcha.

Post:
Hello :),
By curiosity, I checked the stats of participants ordered by Total credit.
If you look at the first 1000 with this order,
you will see that some have 0 amicable pair discovered, although they contributed a lot.
But the interesting fact is that these participants all started in 2018.
So I assume they did a lot of number crunching at a time when there was nothing to found in the current range and quit before seeing some good news.
Best regards,
Laurent Lyaudet
