Hey, you are rewarding something like 50 20 times more than other projects. Why don't you think at lowering instead?

Why don't you work on getting the other projects to raise their lousy credits? :)

Thank you for the help with the challenge Sergei. Without you adding the stats I'm afraid it would have been a total disaster. With your help it was a success!

It appears the BoincStats challenge SW has a bug that isn't allowing it to grab data from the project. Both FreeDC and Bstats did grab data for their general stats listing after the start of the challenge. It may have something to do with the Challenge not listing the project name ... Willy supposedly fixed that bug but it looks like he has more work to do. A real shame!

@Bill, unless someone wants to take the time to setup a full database and control the stats like PG has done then there is no way to stop it. If a project were to limit the number of WU given to a particular computer you can always launch a bunch of VMs to overcome that. Those that are inclined to bunker will do it and those that aren't won't. Everyone has the same opportunity so it is a choice each individual makes ... there is no right and no wrong (IMHO).

The only real benefit of the challenges is that it usually gives a big boost to the chosen project. There were 18 teams entered in this challenge. There are something like 8 teams that automatically sign up for every challenge. That means that an additional 10 teams chose to run this project for 5 days and participate. That would have introduced quite a few new people to AN (it probably still did) and it helps the project.

Hopefully the 2nd challenge will run smoother :)

A matter of opinion and you are certainly entitled to yours :)

You need to be careful with banning for invalids. I have quite a few showing up where I completed the WU but a wingman aborted or timed out and then it was issued to a 3rd person. Apparently the server then CANCELLED the WU because the 3rd person is showing "not needed". The WU winds up showing on my account as "completed, can't validate."

Your sig only shows one - THAT, I could live with. What that one MEANS (yours is "Sc" at the moment, Scandium) I have no clue.

Not that it matters, except maybe to me, the Sc badge is 19.5M credits. I have 144 other badges/trophies from POGs ... that is beyond ridiculous! :)

With regards to AN I think that 2 badges might be appropriate - one for credits since that is the norm and a 2nd for found pairs since that is the ultimate goal of the project. The reason for the 1st is because a lot of work is actually being done eliminating numbers that don't produce pairs.

Badges are only annoying if you are "stuck" at a certain level for a very long time. Balancing that against the "new badge every day" projects is the trick.

Those thresholds they chose are ridiculous! Once you have the 1M badge (I do) the next step in line is 50M. The average user will NEVER get to that level and if they do the level after that is 250M. Even the BIG boys would have to dedicate their 100s of machine to that full time for months.

The object of the badges is to give the "average" user incentive to continue working a project because with some more effort they can change the their badge and feel they've accomplished something. It gives them something to work for. The levels don't have to be easy, but they do need to be reachable for the average user.

As you stated, it is frustrating to be "stuck" at a level forever. Personally, I'll run DrugDiscovery when they come out with a new sub-project just to get 100 hours worth for WuProp stars. I'll also probably run it for challenges. But there is no way I'm going to sit on the project long enough to hit 50M. If DD reduced their badge levels by a factor of 10 then it would be better for them (and the users).

The badge a day projects you mention, besides POGs, what other project does that?

IMHO opinion of course :)

I'd vote for fixed plateaus on the badges. It gives incentive to the users to strive for the next level. Just don't make the levels so high that it is virtually impossible for the average user to ever obtain them. There are some projects that once you get to 5M credits the next level is 50M and that is virtually impossible for the average user to achieve.

-------=======> Challenge standings <=======-------

SUSA has issued a Team Challenge starting 0000 UTC March 1.

Unfortunately, there was a bug in the challenge sign up SW that wouldn't allow the name Amicable Numbers to be shown in the project field. The bug was reported and has been corrected by Willy @ Bstats but he said it would take a while for project name to show up.

You can sign up your team HERE

But I'll also look at the client code to see if I can modify the server to tell the client how many threads to use.

Adding a app_config files isn't rocket science. A good example with step-by-step instructions should allow anyone to change it. For those who aren't already familiar with the technique it gives them a chance to learn something.

If you do make a modification to preferences, please have a selection that is ALL or 100%. There is no other setting that will work for those with more than 4 machines (using "locations") that have different thread counts.

I'm having the same problem. The machines with 32G RAM are no longer getting new work. The machines with 48G-128G are still pulling work. I don't know if the new WU will actually use that amount of RAM since I haven't run one yet.

EDIT: the latest ones do not use any more RAM than the older ones.

It isn't showing ALL of the factors. If you look at the Wiki page you referenced earlier then drop down from the basic formula and look at the form of the Euler's rule. The displayed result is a amicable pair but just shown in a different format.

I'm sure there are more modern and complete theorems being used now because both models mentioned by Wiki aren't all inclusive.

Wiki states; "While these rules do generate some pairs of amicable numbers, many other pairs are known, so these rules are by no means comprehensive."
